Worldbuilder needs help

Post #1by Jill D Holloman » 13.03.2019, 16:50

How can I take snapshots of the Celestia window/screen - and save the images to my HDD?
How do I create fictional solar systems?
How do I create my own original suns and planets?
I want to use Celestia to creat space scenes of my own contrived systems and save the images as JPEGS or BMPS

Also - can anybody point to some freeware (NOT SHARE WARE, TRIALWARE, OR PERSONAL USE ONLY WARE) - that I can use to create repeatable terrain,or - create maps of my own planets???
na

Under Windows, Celestia's menu File --> Capture image saves a copy of its window to whatever file you specify in either JPEG or PNG (but not BMP) format. Otherwise, you can use your favorite screen-grab program. In either case, you are limited to images no larger than your computer's screen.

To define a fictional solar system, you can use your favorite text editor (not word processor!) to create your own Celestia Solar System Catalog (.SSC) file.
To define a fictional star you can use your favorite text editor to create your own Celstia STar Catalog (.STC) file.
For more information, see
https://www.classe.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/creating-ssc-files.html
and
https://www.classe.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/addon-intro.html

Reference material for Celestia's catalog files is available in section 3.2 of http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Celestia

Also, StarGen by brons creates random planetary systems. It has an option which can cause it to generate .SSC files. It's available at https://eldacur.com/~brons/NerdCorner/StarGen/StarGen.html
There are several enhanced versions of StarGen "floating around the Web" which have been optimized for Celestia.

I like to use Torben Mogensen's program "planet" to create surface texture images for Earth-like planets. See http://hjemmesider.diku.dk/~torbenm/Planet/

Can you give us an example?

The only relevant result on google was a fork i made of stargen source in my github, but i never even touched the code.

A link to a .7z archive of a Windows binary on Google Drive is provided in the post viewtopic.php?p=134470#p134470
It downloaded for me OK. I haven't tried running it.

A variant for running under Linux is mentioned later in that thread. I dunno if it's still available.
