Preliminary release of Red Supergiant catalog

Post #1by nussun » 02.08.2020, 19:00

Note: This is not the full version of the RSG catalog, and only includes the (mostly) finished files.

This is a Red Supergiant catalog I made for Celestia (derived from simbad and a little from wikipedia), it contains more than 1000 RSGs and some candidate RSGs. Currently there are a lot of files and it's quite a mess, I hope you'll enjoy nonetheless. I'm still working on the catalog and the full release will have RSG binaries, and a lot more missing RSGs not classified as RSGs in Simbad.

Just keep in mind these files may be subject to change in the future.

Whoops! Looks like I forgot to include the Yellow hypergiant texture, so here it is!

@nussun : In first I think "again a new catalog..." and in second: what does your addon give more for celestia ?

I explain : I use the excellent catalog of Gaia made by ajtribick and I took for example the star HD 9548.

The star is in both catalog, so what is the new ?

TY for your return.

jujuapapa, the catalog includes all red supergiants (not all because it's not finished yet, but that's the idea). Not all red supergiants are in the HIP and TYC catalogs - for example, Stephenson 2-18. The catalog also specifies radii for the stars, so HIP/TYC red supergiants are updated with more accurate radii.

There appear to be a number of stars that lack sourcing information. For a random example, HD 45829. Do you intend to include these for the final version?

I made a file for Stephenson 2-18 as accurately as I can.

The whole code on the file says this:

# The star Stephenson 2-18, which is located in the constellation Scutum and currently estimated to be the largest star ever discovered. Located 18,900 light years from the Sun, with a luminosity of 437,000 x that of the Sun and radius 2,150 x (rounded to 2,200 suns on the Celestia label) which would engulf the orbit of Saturn if placed in our Solar System.

# STC-file authors: Eric Nelson.

# Date of creation: 02.03.2021

"Stephenson 2-18:St2-18:Stephenson 2 DKF 1:RSG2-18"
{
RA 278.61981743236
Dec -6.51053569661
Distance 18900
SpectralType "M6"
AppMag 7.150
Radius 1496400000
UniformRotation
{
Period 30360
}
InfoURL "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephenson_2-18"
}

Of course I added the rotation period since without it, Celestia would display its rotation period at 24 hours, which's unrealistically fast for a red supergiant of such magnitude and would generate extreme (yet deadly) centrifugal forces FAR exceeding its gravitational pull for such a behemoth of a star.
Star Trek portrays Antares as an ellipsoidal star as a result of such rotation for a red supergiant and Stephenson 2-18's highly unlikely to be so elliptical in shape, yet Antares is nowhere near St2-18's estimated radius.

I also found the red supergiant "RSG.cmod" mesh and RSG.png texture for it and other red supergiants/hypergiants from this link https://celestia.space/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=20357 to use as it should look like how such would view red supergiants or hypergiants up close.

I know I made my SSC file on March 2, but finally showed you guys the code for it on here today.

Update: after realizing it was included in the RSG_clusters.stc file, these coordinates for the star turned out to be technically wrong though relatively close to the true value.
And back in 2020 it was categorized as an M7Ia star but it now categorized as an M6Ia star and the distance was modified to its current estimate (which's 5.8 kpc or 18917.070021040377 ly) rather than 6 kpc (which's 19569.3827803866 ly instead of 19569.8002 ly).

I have the addon of the supergiants and found that VV Cephei A and B are not tidally locked and neither are HR 5171 Aa and HR 5171 Ab.

VV Cephei A and B orbit each other in 20.3440348 Earth years which's actually 178335.8090568 Earth hours rather than 178332 Earth hours.
Yet HR 5171 Aa and Ab's orbits of 3.5702 Earth years corresponds to 31311.483242223 Earth hours not 31296 Earth hours.

Plus the tidal bulges of VV Cephei A and B face sideways in this addon when they should be facing each other.

Instead of a semi axes of [ 1 0.99230671131 1 ], it's [ 0.99230671131 1 1 ]

Plus, I had to correct V838 Monocerotis as its a binary star system rather than a single star and even though the orbital parameters are unknown, they values are best-based on the frequency of the variability of V838 Mon A and its eruptions (which create the nebula around it).
Plus it's no longer categorized as an L3 star, but at least an M7 and its radius is now 467 x Sol's.

I had to make an original texture for V838 Mon A since there's no place to find a star texture named after it and the addon didn't come with it despite the file using Texture "v838-mon.*".
And I modified the addon so every file in this addon renders the stars with the RSG.cmod mesh and RSG.png texture though the C-class stars are using the red-supergiant.png texture while all the K and G-class stars are using the yellow-hypergiant.png texture, and the distance of Alf Ori (also known as Betelgeuse) was fixed to 547.96 light years (its best-measured approximate distance from Sol) rather than 497.96 light years.
And the Wikipedia sizes folder needed some modifications based on the latest as well as most reliable measurements (including Betelgeuse who's radius is 531514800 km or 764 x Sol's which's rounded to 696000 km on Celestia as opposed to 695700 km since 531744000 km is 764 x the 696000 km value for Sol's radius.
Yet the 325032000 km radius for V838 Mon A was based on the rounded 696000 km Solar radius x 467 and each star in this addon bases its radius on the number x 696000 km "solar" radius factor (whereas 695700 km x 467 is actually 324891900 km).

This is not accurate at all, because magenta does not exist, let alone being an blackbody color! Its an illusion of the human eye due to us not being able to see non-visible light.

...why magenta? Maybe the Unity engine's ruined the color for me, but all I can think of when I see this is broken shaders. The star isn't pure #00FFFF cyan either, but at least that would be a bit less insane.
