Best approach for creating graphical overlay?

Hello,

Steve here. I'm finally able to start work on my project to add a human gesture control interface to Celestia (http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16371)

Before I start, I wondered if I could have your advice. I need to add a collection of 2D graphical overlays to the Celestia app. These are simplified navigation overlays to compliment a gesture control system for children. E.g. the user enter 'menu' mode and up pops pictures of the planets, sol and other interesting objects, which the user selects by using some gesture. The menu then disappears and control is handed back to Celestia to 'goto'.

What is the best approach for displaying an overlay in front of the Celestia 3D engine?
