cosmetic problem with star texture

Post #1by spacenerd » 08.07.2018, 14:11

Hi

I installed a lot of adding and to my surprise the star textures look weird for my liking

Example 1

Example 2

I would like to know how to make all stars appear as pixels without the fancy textures
something like this would be appreciated

Celestia provides three different ways of displaying stars (star styles): "points", "scaled discs" and "fuzzy points". It will select the next different display method each time you type a Ctrl-S.

Your pictures show the stars being drawn as very bright "fuzzy points".

Cycled through with Ctrl+S and the screenshots above are all I'm able to get
I could delete all Addons but ...
Is there another way?

The most important Addon I need to keep is the measured space like in the last screenshot but I can't remember what it is called
maybe you know what Addon it is?

Hi spacenerd. :hi:
In the Example 2 image I read a tiny "Denorios belt", so probably it is Jestr's Denorios belt addon, that you can find here
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/show_addon_details.php?addon_id=142
Did I guess it?

Yeah, I was downloading this fictional Addon pack just for fun but that's not important.

What I mean is where you zoom away from the Milkyway and then you see all the observable galaxies on the 3D coordinate system with the circles around (the coordinate system is in greenish lines and the galaxies are I believe from three catalogues in red, blue, yellow and green - they are displayed as pixels, and I would like to have our local cluster also only in pixel stars and not the fancy aura around every star).

If I would know that Addon - it's a while ago that I downloaded this and really can't remember the name of it.

Added after 27 minutes 23 seconds:
it's this or these Addons to make the observable space visible (could be three Addons maybe and I don't know where they are what they are called)

would be great if you know the names of these so I can try delete all Addons and only keep these

Hmmmm... may be that Selden made some of these addons, or perhaps Cham, don't remember.
Just an example, Selden made this,

WMAP_Background__Selden.jpg

that you can find here:

If they are reading this post, surely will confirm or deny my guess.

Yes, that's one I created. That addon, along with several others like it, uses a single CMOD model (mesh) to draw all of the "stars". They're defined to be "points". Celestia draws CMOD "points" as individual pixels and does not apply any distance cues other than perspective.

One way to try find out if the star display problem is caused by some Addon is to temporarily rename your "extras" directory something else (e.g. NotExtras), so that Celestia won't load its contents. If the stars are still drawn incorrectly then the problem is caused by something else. FWIW, when I've seen many stars drawn like that on my own system it's usually been because I've explicitly defined their brightnesses (AbsMag or AppMag) to be abnormally bright (e.g. set them all to have an AppMag of -10).
