Floating point number format?

Are the floating point numbers in stars.dat in the IEEE 754 format? Here is a web page about it in case anyone wants to know what it is. http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/754/

Re: Hubble servicing mission cancelled

I read on space.com that they may send a spacecraft to Hubble that will get attached to it and then deorbit it. Why can't they make it go the other way into a bigger orbit or maybe even a solar orbit so that one day we could get it back and put it into a museum. They said that they didn't want to se...

Re: the universe 2 million years ago

I have to agree with grant. 2 million years is merely a tick of the Second Hand on the Cosmos clock, not that I'm an authority on the subject. Heck, when viewing the Andromeda galaxy today, we're seeing it 2 million years ago! Maybe 200 million years would show more of a difference.:| If we extende...

Re: How to install DXT3 Addon Texture (Mars by DBrady).

Here's what's now happening. I can see the new textures - but only when zoomed in close to the planet. When zooming out, all goes black again. Is this graphics card power ? I think that maybe it's because you have only the level4 set of tiles as you said before. To avoid seeing it become black, I t...

Re: Improved Panoramas for Celestia

Sorry about that. It's what happens when I think of something new. I see what you mean by having different sized concentral spheres. We could track a faraway object of interest while moving between the spheres so the view won't change much from one panorama to the next. But what if you don't ...

Re: Improved Panoramas for Celestia

Wow those are cool. 8) I have been making planet maps in POV-Ray by making a texture on a sphere and putting a spherical camera at the sphere's center. Now I can make any scene and put it on the sphere 3ds model. It would be a good idea to make a program that can write ssc files to put those panoram...

I can't extract the NGC 5128 or the Carina addons with the ZipCentral program I use. :( What zip program should I use?

Re: Ocean planets

I'll certainly make that a project for the future; the textures need a little work in the meantime. one of the things that is good about Celestia is the chance to see the stars from another solar system; you can make up a whole new set of constellations to reflect local preoccupations for instance....

Re: Topographic Earth (& Venus)

Wow, I have the same virtual texture on my site, but it is only a 8k jpg one with 1k tiles so I'll post links to pages that have addons, including yours, sometimes. And I can now take that texture off of my site to make room for any addons I may make. :D

Now they work. Thank you, it is better than seeing the same asteroid.cms model used all over the place. Many imagary models and textures is better than one imagary model and texture. 8)

Thebe Crater Location

The crater Zethus on Thebe was mentioned so I tried to put a location for it on Thebe. Location "Zethus" "Sol/Jupiter/Thebe" { LongLat [ -175 10 0 ] Size 40 Type "AA" } But I can't see it. 3ds models can have locations on them because I saw one on Phobos and o...

Re: MinorMoons

I have made the textures, but when I export a model from '3DS Max' it limits the name of the textures to 8 (I think?) characters long so I renamed them to something like the original,-so Desdemona=desdemon, etc. As all of the moons you mentioned have more than 8 letters I assume this is whats causing ...

I could get all of the minor moon 3ds models but could not get the textures for Callirrhoe, Desdemona, Epimetheus, Harpalyke, Megaclite, Praxidike and Prometheus. Are those textures unfinished?
