The Windows version of 7-Zip (which is free) has no problems reading those .RAR files. If you haven't already, you might give the Linux version of 7-Zip a try.

You might try applying a surface texture image to the model by including a Texture statement in the object's SSC catalog entry. Depending on how the model's materials were defined, the surfaces affected by the texture image might include the areas you want to recolor.

Usually the best way to get a compatible model format is to contact the person who created it. They're likely to be able to provide model or its components in any of a number of formats. I think you may have overlooked part of what I wrote. To expand on it: this is a *bug* in v1.6.1 which should be fixed in v1.6.2 if at all possible. specularmap textures specified in CMOD files were documented to work in v1.6.1 but do not.

For me, Celestia v1.6.1 crashes after I select a star (left-mouse-button click on any of them) and then type "f" to follow it.

I had been wanting to then use the mouse-wheel to back off and see the overall shape of the star distribution but I can't get that far.

It looks to me like there's a bug in whatever program you're using to create the CMOD model. Apparently that program is not trying to use the 2nd material (material 1) at all. In a CMOD model, the first value after the word "sprites" is supposed to be the index value of the material which ...

Sorry, at this point I don't know what might be going wrong :(

Here's a zip of a CelX Addon which does file i/o (to read .csv files) that I recently updated and have been using with no problems. I'm guessing that it'll fail for you. :(
