Low priority: There's a spurious character prefixing the copyright symbol in the About text. See the screengrab below, where I've underlined it in red.

Re: Why is Period needed for Kepler inputs

Both SemiMajorAxis and Period are required by EllipticalOrbit and are the only parameters which are required. Celestia does not (currently?) contain any code to calculate the Period. However, you can specify your own orbital calculations if you replace EllipticalOrbit by ScriptedOrbit. See https://e...

Re: High Fidelity Gravity Models

Rather than thinking of Celestia as a simulator or even an emulator, I prefer to think of it as a 3D display program which happens to be optimized for showing astronomical objects. Celestia has to be told where each object is and what it looks like. It draws planets, moons, stars and DSOs in their c...

Re: Can someone please convert a .cmod model to either 3ds or .obj for me

You might try applying a surface texture image to the model by including a Texture statement in the object's SSC catalog entry. Depending on how the model's materials were defined, the surfaces affected by the texture image might include the areas you want to recolor.

Re: Can someone please convert a .cmod model to either 3ds or .obj for me

Usually the best way to get a compatible model format is to contact the person who created it. They're likely to be able to provide model or its components in any of a number of formats. I've done that for several people. If you don't know who created the model, please specify the name of the cmod a...

Re: A Forking Commit Thread.

Do you want to hear about other problems? For example, when the Sun is selected, its distance is shown twice in its HUD display but with different values. Also, in the highest verbose mode, two of the entries seems to be missing their descriptive labels. See the attached screengrab, which shows the ...

Re: New bugfix release 1.6.2-beta1

I think you may have overlooked part of what I wrote. To expand on it: this is a *bug* in v1.6.1 which should be fixed in v1.6.2 if at all possible. specularmap textures specified in CMOD files were documented to work in v1.6.1 but do not.

CMOD Specularity Bug in 1.6.2

CMOD Specularity Bug in 1.6.2 If a specularmap image file is specified in a CMOD model, that image is ignored by v1.6.2 (and by v1.6.1). It works in v1.7.0. It'd be nice if the fix could be backported to v1.6.2. The attached Addon provides an ASCII CMOD model (models/planet.cmod) and surface texture...

Maybe just document what is wrong about them?

Sometimes "perfect" is an enemy of "good enough".

Good luck!

I did a quick test after posting my response, and it didn't do what I expected. I probably made a typo of my own somewhere. *sigh*

Re: Custom star database causes Celestia to crash when certain keys are pressed

For me, Celestia v1.6.1 crashes after I select a star (left-mouse-button click on any of them) and then type "f" to follow it.

I had been wanting to then use the mouse-wheel to back off and see the overall shape of the star distribution but I can't get that far.

Re: Help - CMOD seems to only use first material

It looks to me like there's a bug in whatever program you're using to create the CMOD model. Apparently that program is not trying to use the 2nd material (material 1) at all. In a CMOD model, the first value after the word "sprites" is supposed to be the index value of the material which ...

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Thanks for letting us know that lacking the wait() caused the problem! That's a relief, since it'd be very frustrating otherwise.

Best of luck with getting your Quaternions to work as they should.

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

@SimGuy: Yup, that's the appropriate on-screen prompt. Sorry, I previously forgot to mention that you actually need two lines in order for i/o to be allowed: celestia:requestsystemaccess() wait(0) Without the wait, I doubt it'll work. I dunno if that's your problem, though. For details, see https://...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Janus, Thanks for investigating. It certainly has me puzzled. I had a problem like this under Win7 with Celestia 1.6.1, but it went away when I upgraded to Win10 with the same graphics drivers. It might be something funky in the Windows cursor configuration, but then I'd expect it to affect 1.6.1, t...

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Sorry, at this point I don't know what might be going wrong :(

Here's a zip of a CelX Addon which does file i/o (to read .csv files) that I recently updated and have been using with no problems. I'm guessing that it'll fail for you. :(

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Unfortunately, 1.7 is still in "pre-alpha" mode and has quite a few changes and, well, bugs. I suggest it would not be appropriate to use 1.7 while trying to develop "production code" since it'd be rather difficult to separate bugs in your code from bugs or changes in Celestia. M...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

A newly observed glitch (I don't use fullscreen mode often): When running in full-screen mode at 1920x1080, my on-screen cursor is not being drawn. It appears when I move it up to the top of the screen, causing the menu bar to appear, but it goes away again as soon as I move it down so the menu bar ...
