Re: And now for something completely different...
Thanks Reiko. It's funny, after reading the plot I am sure I have read at least one of the books because the puppeteer aliens sound very familiar... Perhaps I read one of the sequels.

Re: Particle System / Volumetric fills / Clouds
I guess I don't understand sprites well enough... I did one simple test with them once, but didn't like how they looked the same from every angle. I probably just don't understand how to use them and should take another look. However, my meager understanding after doing some reading this afternoon i...

Re: Particle System / Volumetric fills / Clouds
I can't speak for all, but I am not looking for time related particle systems, though it might be neat for those Io volcanoes. I would just like the ability to use cloud "like" meshes for nebulae, accretion disks, cloud layers, etc. A static cloud is fine, because I can make it move using orbit and ...

Re: And now for something completely different...
Guess I'll have to read it... I love sci-fi, but taking the leap of "faith" to get into it has become increasingly tougher the older I get... :? I've wanted to write a novel many times, but always want the science to be right so my ideas meet with the silly wall of reality so often... At least that'...

Re: And now for something completely different...
Really cool model, but... Considering gravity here, wouldn't there be WAY too much pull at the surface. I would think you would see a flat featureless surface... Of course, I never read Ringworld, so I do not know the back story.

That is a great link Andrea. I only got to glance at it for a minute or two, but will be looking at it some more tonight.

Re: Kepler's solar system model (work in progress)
Oh, I know you can buy copies of the classics. I have many leftover from my college days. What I want is a copy that "looks" like the original... Not translated, not changed. Perhaps printed on vellum, but without the price. I would pay $40 for something like that...

No, sorry Fenerit, I meant it is not as eloquent or classical sounding. English sometimes lack the beauty of the romance languages.

Re: Kepler's solar system model (work in progress)
Nice resource Andrea. I wonder if it is possible to buy reproductions of texts somewhere... There is a company (http://www.octavo.com/) that will sell scans of books like Galileo's Sidereus and Newton's Opticks on cd, but it would be neat to be able to buy a copy of these on some authentic looking m...

Re: Object Timeline proposal
That actually makes a whole bunch of sense to me as well and it is similar to Toti's concept. If we define a Beginning and then for each phase define a span of time, in seconds perhaps, future periodic installations would be easy. Maybe you could even leave off a beginning as you have left off the e...

Re: Night Side Lights Not Displaying
Strange that it is just the moons though....
It must be my machine, what a strange glitch. I will attempt it at work today if I get the chance. What a bummer. I updated the ATI drivers to see if that was it with no luck. I will have to lobby for a Nvidia. Perhaps I can earmark a bill.

Sorry John, I meant that your ssc was what I had for my ssc...
I tried reinstalling Celestia, tried using John's setup, tried setting a night side on Europa, all to no avail... I can see the night side of Jupiter when installed, but not on moons.

I seem to have the same issues around a night texture applied to moons. The planetary night textures work fine. I cannot see my Io night textures.

Re: Object Timeline proposal
I love this idea. I agree with the concept that each model in an ssc should have it's own timeline. If I am interpreting this correctly the timeline Chris is proposing would be a location and orientation declaration only. So, in the Huygens example, Cassini would be it's own model. Huygens would be ...

Re: New accretion disk method (WORK IN PROGRESS)
I don't know Andrea. I think you might have to drop the planet sizes or increase the Mars-Jupiter Gap either way... If you put any belt into the current model it would be too thin to my eyes... You could enlarge that gap in your model seeing how Jupiter is roughly 3 times further out than Mars to ac...
