Re: Post your Celestia pictures!

Here's my take on Kepler-22b. Until it is determined what kind of world it is, I've decided to represent it as a water world...

Re: Two TRULY Earth-sized exoplanets found

This sounds like a rather lame excuse, but I got it from the Kepler site. The stats on the planets seemed to point to some level of eccentricity. Here's what the Discovery Tables on its website says... http://kepler.nasa.gov/Mission/discoveries/ I'm not trying to be argumentative. I made it this way...

Re: Two TRULY Earth-sized exoplanets found

Made an add-on of this last night. Unfortunately, without some further orbital parameters, here's how it all looks... As you can see, there's some overlap between the orbits of b and e. Part of this is due to the uncertainty regarding the eccentricity of e. I've done no textures for it yet, so every...

Re: Post your Celestia pictures!

Where o where do you get your cloud maps? I know you've said you use Rassilon's Cluster Generator for textures and stuff, but I have an older version, which doesn't include texture generation. (Same goes for his ssc generator.) If that's what you're using, how can I get my hands on an updated versio...

Re: Post your Celestia pictures!

I like the whole "demotivational" quality to your poster, PE.

Don't down on yourself too bad regarding your textures. If you like how they look, great. If others like them, even better.

Re: new moon orbits Pluto

Don't get me wrong. I laugh at the humor I find in it. I'm ok with calling it a dwarf planet. I think it will be really neat to see what New Horizons reveals about Pluto and its moons.

PS-like the work on the models!

Re: Could Pluto have a giant gash in it?

I ain't buying it...Maybe we're better off waiting for New Horizons (which is over halfway there). I'm looking forward to seeing how it REALLY looks.

This "technique" seems more like wishful thinking/extreme hypothesizing.

Can this work?

I recently found this site: http://astro.troja.mff.cuni.cz/projects/asteroids3D/web.php?page=project_main_page It contains models of asteroids based on lightcurve data, including many that wouldn't be the "usual suspects" (Ceres, Vesta, etc.). Is there any way one could use these in Celest...

Wow. Imagine that for your nightly view...although, it wouldn't be very dark for nighttime! fungun: I picked up the method from here- http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp?SID=750E519C10986BC514EE4E8634A54E782BF It took a little time for me to get everything right, and it's still not 100% perfec...

Strange, but cool. The gas giant's clouds appear to actually have texture. How did you do that?

Re: Preferred Method of System Creation

I was recently directed to this method of texture creation (courtesy of Selden's list of links)... http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp?SID=750E519C10986BC514EE4E8634A54E782BF it contains a tutorial for making earthlike and other planetary textures. It takes some time w/ GIMP or PhotoShop, but ...

ME? Build StarGen myself?!?!?!     (sometimes my own laughter is insufficient.) In all seriousness, I don't have the skills for that sort of thing...(my true skills are with the green and the growing. ) I couldn't remember what my seed number was (hence the #). I'...

I've been trying to do the ssc generator from StarGen and here's what I've been getting.... Re: upload to the Motherload - what NOT TO DO

So if one was making an add-on based on a work of fiction, one would need to acknowledge the creator of said work? For example, I'm working on Anne McCaffrey's Pern (from the Dragonriders of Pern series). Wanting to avoid a lawsuit, yet wanting to share my work with others, how do I work around this...

Re: Procedural texture generators?

Have you tried Genetica? They offer a 30-day trial, plus they also offer their free viewer. The texture packs they have are free, tileable, and look pretty decent. Some work may be needed to do on them in GIMP, but I like what I've gotten so far. Its setup looks similar to what you've displayed. A n...

Re: What do you use Celestia for?

20 some years ago, I had recieved the book, Cycles of Fire by William K. Hartmann and Ron Miller. To put it mildly, it blew me away, and began my fixation with astronomical illustration. (My art teacher at the time said she knew Mr. Miller and even offered to make an introduction...sadly it never ha...
