Re: The Sky at Night Appreciation Thread

Chris North is an Oxford chappie? He certainly studied cosmology at Oxford, and that is where he met Chris Lintott, and got involved as an Astronomy Researcher for the Sky At Night. After studying at Oxford, he moved onto Cardiff University where he was part of the ESA's PLANCK and HERSCHEL mission...

Re: The Sky at Night Appreciation Thread

Can't believe a year has gone by since my last post about The Sky at Night 8O In the meantime we had the 700th anniversary programme. Sir Patrick is still presenting the show, although his speech is becoming quite hard to understand now. I'm also wondering if Lintott is going to be a regular present...

Farewell to Paul The Octopus

I've just read the sad news that there will be no more football predictions from Paul the Octopus.
He passed away at the aquarium in Oberhausen last night :(

Here's the BBC news link : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11626050

Re: The Sky at Night Appreciation Thread

This months edition titled Events on Jupiter is showing tonight on BBC1 at 12:30 BST. Sir Patrick, will be discussing the disappearance of the southern equitorial belt on Jupiter with guests John H Rogers and Leigh Fletcher. Must admit I dusted off the old 'scope and took advantage of the fact we ha...

Re: Haiti sized earthquake in my city this morning....

The quake has made the main news headlines on tv and radio over here, glad to see that the human casualty list seems to be very small.
Hope there's not too much damage to yourself or your property.

Re: The World Cup Controversy thread (renamed)

Perhaps this year's World Cup won't best be remembered for the quality of the football, but it has at least left one lasting legacy. Vuvuzela has just gained entry into the 2010 edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English, along with 2000 other words such as toxic debt , staycation and Geo-engineeri...

Re: The Sky at Night Appreciation Thread

Only saw half of the last one 'Monster Star' then it was taken off iPlayer... grrr. Blimey, they soon got rid of that. Unlike some certain other programmes I can think of. ....ie TOP GEAR. I wouldn't mind, but you know Clarkson and Co will be repeated a million times a day on BBC3 and the DAVE chan...

Re: The Sky at Night Appreciation Thread

Cheers john, I've just re-watched the show to make sure I hadn't confused British Summer Time with Universal or Greenwich Mean Time, but they definitely state BST. On the Sky at Night they said to start viewing Jupiter at around 02:40 BST (01:40 UT), and here's their diagram showing an inverted Jupi...

Re: The Sky at Night Appreciation Thread

Great show this month and the 30 minute edition sees the newly discovered hypergiant star R136a1 as the main feature. We also have news on the first 10 months of the Planck mission, a solar eclipse from Easter Island, images from the Rosetta mission flyby of asteroid Lutetia, Mercury Messanger's dis...

Re: The World Cup Controversy thread (renamed)

Well, the Dutch tactic was just to get in there and disrupt the Spanish game as much as possible, rather than playing their own game. Unfortunately that made for a very messy and antagonistic game with most of the dutch team yellow-carded, and 1 sent off. It was a pity because it was NOT a "be...

Re: The World Cup Controversy thread (renamed)

I love to cook octopus dishes  Paul has picked Spain to win the final over The Netherlands. Watching a World Cup report yesterday I saw a Dutch fan's comment on Paul's prediction and he said in very good English "Chop, chop, chop!" - somehow I don't think he meant "hurry up&...

Re: The World Cup Controversy thread (renamed)

"Wow, the Octopus done good!" to coin an English football phrase. 100% correct with predictions so far this World Cup - I'm beginning to believe 8O From a chessplayer's perspective, Spain was the better team in the first half. And I think they were even better in the second half. Instead o...

Re: The World Cup Controversy thread (renamed)

so I see you guys found another reason why Germany is not going to win this time?? ;-) Too right, there's no way I'm saying that octopus sucks !! For me a way more serious reason is that our young 'star' Mueller is blocked (2 yellow cards, one unjustified). No doubt he'll be missed, but if Spain do...

I wonder about its motivations, which surely cannot be football claimed. - the food: it is the same? - the flags' colors which seem like undersea rocks stratigraphy? - is the same whether a container's flags is more or less close to the octopus? :?: As far as I know, Paul the Octopus originally cam...
