One of My Textures to be on TV

Not sure if this is the best place for this, and if its not than Selden is more than free to move it to Purgatory. I have been contacted by WGBH Boston for the use of one of my Mars textures in an upcoming episode of NOVA ScienceNOW. The air date is set for Wednesday, July 30 2008 at 9pm your local ...

Re: Contact with space aliens

I was watching a History Chanel episode of "The Universe" that brought some of what has been said here into perspective. Everyone is thinking that all our radio waves are traveling out from Earth in this bubble and that it is not being impacted. The simple fact is that all the background r...

Re: Earth Does Not Look Right w/High-Res (8K) Textures

Edit your solarsystem.ssc and set Earth's clouds to "00" cloudspeed. You can't have 8k and them rotating at the same time. Its a limitation of Celestia.

Re: Astronomers name dwarf planets after Pluto!!!

Its of course not confirmed but they are starting to think that certain perturbations in the ort cloud could be do to a planet with a mass of 0.30 to 0.70 of Earth's mass. This means a planet possibly the size of Mars to 3/4 the size of Earth. If in fact they find this ort cloud giant are they going...

Re: MY EARTH

I know exactly where he got it from, not from me, but one of my past sources. This is obviously the the work of Mario of the now lost Space-Graphics.com. The site has long since gone down but Fridger used to work with him regularly on Mars textures. I have no idea what and or why Space-Graphics clos...

Actually it makes a very unique gas giant texture. Very cool effects, don't know why I never thought of this myself.

Re: Adding snow to Furahan texturemap

There is a way to create snow and ice on mountains if thats what you are looking to do. I was going to write a tutorial on how to do this but never did get around to it. Maybe its time to post what I know.

If this is what you are looking for let me know and I will get started on it.

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

Well maybe not triple but there should be a substantial performance benefit over the 7600GT.

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

Well XFX has come a long way from there as PINE. But back a couple of years ago they made horrible video cards under the PINE name. I myself being stung by these bad cards I just can't bring myself to trust them enough to buy one of there cards today. There old cards were plagued by running slower t...

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

danielj, Does the 8800GS have DDR2 or DDR3. Your 7600 GT should have DDR3 memory. If your 8800GS has only DDR2 memory this would be why you are seeing some differences in the rendering. DDR2 memory just doesn't have the speed and the better memory bandwidth of DDR3. There is always the possibility t...

Re: Its a bird! It's a plane! No, it's SuperEarth!

Also I believe a planet with of this size would also have a very thin crust and a much more molten core and mantel. The larger the planet and mass increases the amount of radioactive elements which in hand helps generate heat in the core. A planet like this even as old as the Earth may have a very t...

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

danielj, I haven't tried the Io volcanoes so I can't comment on how thy tax Celestia and a graphics card. But if using the add-on makes the card perform badly it a simple no brainer. Remove or shut off the add-on. Just because an add-on has been made doesn't mean you have to use, no matter how cool ...

Re: Ran III Released

piellepi, Unless you are using XP or Vista 64 bit, that last gig of memory is just sitting there doing nothing, not even getting used. Even if you have Vista 32bit with sp1 its still not using all your RAM. Its simply a limitation of the 32bit OS. Of course OS X users don't have this problem. Don. E...

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

danielj, Overclocking a video card to far can and will slow it down and cause the problems you describing. Overclocking a video is a fragile balancing act. One thing you might to try is a custom built driver set. Google for Omega drivers and download the newest set for you graphics card and OS. I ha...

Re: Candidate Extrasolar Visions Replacement

This might be a good idea as it looks like the site is basically locked as is and won't ever get an update. One thing to consider is possibly getting permission to clone the graphics and information sections but leave them open to upgrading as time goes by. I guess the site would belong to his wife ...

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

Quite well means that it looks visually pleasing and maintaining a playable frame rate. Of course this means several setting are set to medium. It may bring down the visuals to the level of Far Cry set to high, but I can live with that until I get my hands on series 8xxx card. BTW I could never get ...

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

danielj,

You are right. You made a good choice. I am still running a 6800GS so I can atest ti the cards strength even after all this time. It is still quite playable. As a matter of fact Crysis plays quite well on it.

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

ouch, That is only for the high end card and all it is a 8800GTS clocked slightly higher and repackaged. Again people need to do some research. The 8800 GTS and GT are still the better choice over any 9600 card period. The 9600 cards replaced the 8600 witch replaced the 7600 witch replaced the 6600 ...
