Re: Opening CMOD in blender

however there is a DOT NET 5 ( C# ) microsoft only ( maybe linux with wine but i have not tried it ) , cmod to obj program It should work on any platform where the .NET 5 runtime can be installed, which includes Mac and Linux (at least several of the more popular distros), so hopefully WINE would n...

Re: CMOD to OBJ+MTL converter

Made a few minor changes and cleanup (the main difference from the end-user perspective is that the correct version gets displayed if you pass in the --version parameter). New version is v0.1.0-beta3. For those who don't want to compile it themselves, I've added a cross-platform framework-dependent ...

Re: CMOD to OBJ+MTL converter

While the CMOD ASCII format is documented, as far as I'm aware this hasn't been done for the binary format. I've included the places in the Celestia code base where the enums are defined. Values are stored in a little-endian format. Tokens are 16-bit integers. The values are defined in modelfile.h, ...

CMOD to OBJ+MTL converter

I've put together a CMOD to Wavefront OBJ+MTL converter. It's still very preliminary and probably full of bugs (as distinct from limitations caused by the file formats not supporting identical feature sets) but I managed to load the result of converting the default ISS model into Blender. You will n...

W Ursae Majoris binaries

Recently a paper was posted to the arXiv detailing a database of W Ursae Majoris-type binaries: Latković et al. (2021) . I decided to rewrite* my earlier W UMa binaries add-on to use this database. Version 1.0.1 can be downloaded here . After removing systems for which I could not get sufficient dat...

Re: Merging Cosmonium with Celestia?

This is essentially demanding that one of the projects (which one?) gets killed off. I don't see that's necessary, or that the momentum of a new project like Cosmonium should be sapped by tying it into a "legacy" project like Celestia: if Cosmonium has more momentum and development activit...

Re: Updated stars.dat including Gaia DR2 data (update 2020-11-30)

A quick update with regards to the now-released Gaia EDR3. The process I'm using to generate stars.dat relies on several sources external to the Gaia release itself, including: ⋅ The geometric distance catalogue, that estimates the distances with an exponentially-decaying distance prior ba...

Re: Updated stars.dat including Gaia DR2 data (update 2020-11-30)

I've released a new version v1.0.4 which uses relative parallax error to choose between Gaia DR2 and XHIP parallaxes (this affects the cases of Alpha Cas and Delta Sgr mentioned by DrJMOS, they should be back at more reasonable distances). This affects 1787 stars out of a total 2499574. There's also...

Re: Updated stars.dat including Gaia DR2 data (update 2020-11-30)

mean 1.3737 kpc is true? I see you didn't check what was inside the spoiler tag... :) Gaia cannot measure the brightest stars, and of the ones it can measure the bright ones tend to have fairly unreliable parallaxes. Since at the moment I only take the XHIP distances if there is no Gaia parallax, s...

Re: Celestia.Sci news - what's going on?

Quite frankly, if you've decided you don't think it's a dead project that isn't going to end up being released, you are perfectly free to just leave it and move on. The fact that several members of this community continually need to attack and disparage them every time celestia.Sci gets mentioned is...

Re: Celestia.Sci news - what's going on?

A project taking longer than expected does not make it bogus or fraudulent. A project that turns out not to work in the end does not make it bogus or fraudulent. The people involved have lives outside celestia.Sci, progress can be slow or grind to a halt for long periods of time. Talking of economic...

Re: Celestia.Sci news - what's going on?

If I decide to make changes to Celestia's source code, I am not morally obligated to send you every individual keystroke I make. The celestia.Sci developers consider their changes to be in a work-in-progress state, it is their decision on what stage they decide to release them, and in what forum. No...

Re: Celestia.Sci news - what's going on?

As celestia.Sci is unpublished, there is no obligation to share the code. I refer you to the GNU Licenses FAQ . The GPL does not require you to release your modified version, or any part of it. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to or...

Re: Updated stars.dat including Gaia DR2 data (update 2020-11-30)

Quick guide on how to check these kind of issues: Go to the SIMBAD Query by identifier page , query for "alf Cas" This brings up the entry for the star . Near the bottom of the page there is a section called "External archives". This lists the star's entry in various catalogues. ...

Re: Updated stars.dat including Gaia DR2 data (update 2020-11-30)

Released v1.0.3.1, update mainly relates to the cross-indices but there's a bit of refinement in merging data that may affect some of the spectral type estimations. Link at the start of the thread.

(There is no v1.0.3 release, I forgot to update the reference list in the zip archive)

Re: Updated stars.dat including Gaia DR2 data (update 2020-11-30)

New release v1.0.1. I've eliminated a few duplicate entries that were matched to the same Gaia ID, improved the SAO cross-index and incorporated some corrected spectral types. In particular, 19 Piscium is now included as a carbon star. I am hoping this will be the last update until EDR3, but who kno...
