Well you can copy the CelestiaResources folder out to a location, and then in Celestia, choose from menu bar Celestia -> Change Config xxx. And tell Celestia to use the one copied out. This setting is preserved across installs.

About hi-res saturn showing up black, it is related to texture size. The texture in hi-res folder is 2880 x 1440, an npot texture , which shows up black on iOS... So we will need to scale it down to 2048 x 1024.... Does the extras directory not work? I'm not sure, does Celestia scan the extra direct...

hmm, since we edited the celestia.rc, iirc the language.dll is generated with the celestia.rc and .po, they should be rebuilt too, cause the text is still garbled with only the exe as I tested

looks like an apple bug and specific to macOS, even on iOS it is fine. I tested on macOS 10.15.5 on either NVIDIA/AMD(both probably backed by Metal), and macOS 11.0 in VMware (no gpu accelerate so should be just OpenGL), it produces the same result. How should we work around this then.

No good tool for macOS for OpenGL, I used Apitrace, which it says to offer replay, but it didn't work for me, there is only a list of frames and calls. Screen Shot 2020-06-30 at 7.38.46 PM.png bringing glBegin/glEnd is not the right way to fix it, but it can be fixed in this way.... lol but probably...

it is just weird that on Mac, planets/moons don't render while stars render well as point, while on iOS, neither renders. But with MetalANGLE, both are working well. the bad commit seems to be this one cause the moons not to render. https://github.com/CelestiaProject/Celestia/pull/726/commits/87689b...

probably, I think you remember that earlier iPhone version does not show stars, that was one without OpenGLES/Metal something probably went wrong in our code, but I see these are working fine on Android, either moon/star rendering. I can't really be sure. I didn't really test the change when I introduced OpenGLES/Metal translation layer on iOS. But here just to explain why there won't be huge improvement or change for switching from OpenGLES to OpenGLES/Metal. For OpenGL(ES) program, Apple translates the OpenGL(ES) instruction...
