Re: Generic exoplanet textures

To be fair cubic, these could be best added into version 1.7.0 for its final release (when it actually happens) to replace the current defaults. I'm perfectly ok with this, fwiw. Those exoplanets have needed an upgrade for quite a while now. The default planet textures could also use a resolution b...

Generic exoplanet textures

Just a set of replacements for the stock exoplanet textures and asteroid.jpg. I've also included a generic desert world. For best results, dump all the textures in Celestia/textures/hires, and then find and replace all instances of "asteroid.*" in your exoplanet catalogue with "desert...

does anyone use textures from this site?

Mod edit: This thread is in response to a deleted spam post.

I use bits and pieces of their 8K Venus surface map as source material for some of my own worlds, but that's about it.

Kepler-442
Kepler-442 b is a potentially superhabitable world orbiting a main sequence K-class star. I've littered it with the ruins of at least one long-dead civilization.

Look a little closer at screenshot 2, there's some subtle detail deep under the haze.

Figured I'd drop the sequel in the same thread...

Well, I could've listed out planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and a 3D scan of your dog's head, but I like brevity.

Funny you should mention Grand Designer... brimstone gamma1.png brimstone gamma2.png brimstone delta1.png brimstone delta2.png These will probably show up in M83 eventually. I find it a lot easier to reference the enhanced Voyager/etc. colors than desaturated "true-color" images. All the s...

Re: An Io Like moon

An idea... have you thought about using noise to blend between multiple different color ramps? You'd be able to get a lot more color variation, and start to lose some of that synthetic feel procedural textures usually have.

Improved(ish) asteroid.jpg

For no particular reason, I thought I'd use LunarCell to make a 4K clone of asteroid.jpg. I couldn't get the exact seed, of course, but with the other settings managed to get it pretty dead-on. rockball.png I also rendered separate diffuse and bump maps because I can. Feel free to make a normal map ...

Re: Celestia.Sci news - what's going on?

(for example:cubic's red vortex) To answer your question and drop the SNR in this thread even further... My lensing is fake. The mesh is warped around the center, and there's a sphere inside it with inverted normals to help sell the effect. The only way you can add lensing to your own black holes i...

Re: earth 02/9/2021 cloud map

not the best but usable Emphasis there on not the best . I don't know if I just looked at the wrong files, but they certainly don't look like 4k maps. Seems to me, they've produced ~1.5k maps, upscaled them (badly) and JPEG'd them to hell and back. 2021-02-11 15_10_23-2104212000315-Derived_visible_...

Re: Model showing parts that shouldn't be visible

Your textures are probably PNGs, which I think are treated as translucent and mess up depth sorting when they're actually not. Try converting the diffuse textures for opaque materials to JPG.

Re: Neptune SF2020

Something I really want to know though, is how did you do the clouds? The clouds are pretty much just lenticular, cirrus, and altocumulus clouds from free stock photos. Some of them were warped, others heavily sharpened to turn them into masses of fine detail, but it's ultimately all about blending...

Neptune SF2020

My (semifictional) rendition of Neptune as of 2020, with two northern dark spots. I spent what felt like ages trying to get the colors just right, but it's open to debate whether they're even close. On first glance it seems too white, according to the spectrum it's a bit too blue. I've adjusted it t...

Cubic's Resource and Tutorial Collection

This thread will be a compilation of various (mostly texture-related) tutorials that I've found, plus resources like NASA imagery and free stock sites. If you know of any I missed, let me know and I'll add them to the OP. Tutorials Most of these involve Photoshop, but many of them work just fine in ...

Better emissive blending

Anyone who's tried using NightTextures to make planets glow knows that past a certain point, you just can't make it look good. The results often look something like this. globall2.png The transition from day to night is too sharp, and diffuse shading darkens the texture well before the terminator. W...
