Well, that probably explains why several members are missing. Perhaps Simbad has to improve their Variable Star catalogs due to some new members. But thanks for that. I'll see if I can use it

Variable Stars in the Hipparcos Catalog

Well, in trying to add any variable stars into LukeCEL's starnames.dat file, which is incomplete and missing a few such variable stars, I fell into a slump. In order to quicken my search, I tried finding lists and catalogs of all Variable Stars in the Hipparcos Catalog. According to the website of t...

Mind giving us a screenshot of what it looks like?

Perhaps you can ask the devs to try that out and maybe it can be used in the development of Celestia 1.7.0

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

It depends on OS, video card and drivers used. On my old system with fullhd monitor I had ~40 fps on GNU/Linux with free drivers while on Win7 with proprietary drivers there were ~70 fps. Perf said that CPU was mostly occupied by memory coping functions. With modern OpenGL we can greatly decrease n...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

The only think I can imagine is outdated OpenGL commands, which modern drivers don't perform efficently. Pretty much. Is there a chance you can update the OpenGL commands to be up to date with the latest drivers? And also, if done, will it greatly increase the performance of Celestia as a whole?

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Celestia currently doesn't able to manage a lot of objects. So we need to implement a better resource manager. That's not a trivial task. Certainly. Gaia alone possesses 1.6 billion objects. Adding around 2.5 million stars in Celestia and then increasing the magnitude to 12 can make it start laggin...

Re: Project "Celestia Origin", release dated April 30, 2019

Indirectly. I actually extracted the names from SIMBAD, because I find that to be easier. However, I did this quite some time ago. It's possible, but I think unlikely, that more HIP stars were found to be variable. I checked the starnames.dat file you sent me. It does have a huge number of variable...

Well, hoaiphong123, feel free to ask the developers onetwothree and pirogronian the question. Or message them in the forum itself.

I'm still unfamiliar with Discord, but I'll try. Feel free to do so. Discord allows messages in real time, meaning that if you post a message, a notif sound can be heard, and your message automatically comes up on the thread, removing the need to constantly reload the page just to see new replies, ...

Re: New Celestia unified runtime database

Some stars with Greek letters (μ Geminorum, μ Leporis, μ Cephei, ν Eridani) are variable stars, but don't have variable names. That's correct. When naming Variable Stars, the ones naming them(Most recently, the GCVS) do not touch those with Bayer Designations, though they are still listed, just wit...

Re: New Celestia unified runtime database

@Lafuente_Astronomy I don't remember well, but my approach was essentially the same as Sirius_Alpha wrote, only with differente character, "_". Onetwothree proposed something like type=variable inside hash body. My approach was simpler but brake backward compatibility. So, I also proposed...

Re: New Celestia unified runtime database

In relation to the AstroDB Branch, should there be more star indexes, particularly making star indexes out of other large star catalogs like the Guide Star Catalog, the Bright Star Catalog, the Gliese, Gliese-Jahreiß and Woolley Catalogs, the PPM Catalog, 2MASS, etc?

Re: New Celestia unified runtime database

@Lafuente_Astronomy Variable stars naming was discussed by me and onetwothree, but without consensuss. I proposed just special prefix character to indicate non-greek name, while onetwothree proposed to add new specifier, indicating variable star. As a result, this issue is still open. Is it ok with...

Re: New Celestia unified runtime database

Well, I don't see a problem with the Greek Letters but the way we type the Greek Letter spellings in the starnames.dat file is in all caps. It should be fine, except that the letters MU and NU would contradict the variable stars with HIP identifiers which just so happen to be identified with the des...
