Re: Increase the size of galactic and star bases

Not sure if this is the right link, I found http://www.klima-luft.de/steinicke/ngcic/ngcic_e.htm which has a download link for an XLS file. But I'll still look for more sources, especially related to distances and other properties. Also, a bit off-topic, but a bunch of my add-ons finally got updated...

Re: Increase the size of galactic and star bases

I am very worried about how the tool calculates the orientation of the galaxy relative to the Earth. Or was the necessary information in the source? The tool takes the inclination and position angle of the galaxy. Those two are enough to position the plane of the galaxy, but you need a third parame...

Re: Increase the size of galactic and star bases

The main source, Steinicke's NGC/IC catalog, is probably fine. However, I'm having trouble tracking down the supplementary sources. There might also be newer sources for nearby galaxies.

Re: Increase the size of galactic and star bases

Well, is it possible to add stars from the Gaia Archives even though they are not part of either Tycho or Simbad? Art Blos mentioned this, but 2.5 million is the number of real stars you can add using stars.dat. I guess you can add as many stars as you want using STC files, but STC files are much s...

Re: Increase the size of galactic and star bases

Here's a stars.dat that contains stars from the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues, with distances from Gaia DR2 or Hipparcos parallaxes. All in all, it has 2,448,220 stars. This is close to the maximum amount of real stars that can be added to Celestia, since the stars.dat format only works for the T...

Re: Sol has a sibling.

(althrough in Wikipedia they also say this star is a G3, dunno what is correct). I'm think it's G3/5V. Solar twins don't necessarily have to be G2V (see the list on Wikipedia for an example). Although an exact solar twin would have the exact parameters as the Sun, this is unlikely because no two st...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

And while doing so, Joey R pointed that many stars and galaxies have their sizes wrong, and as such, needs fixing. Here is his reply to a post about IC 1101, and my reply to him as well: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16439&p=142659#p142659 I don't think this can really be helped, since Celestia just ...

The official repository of Celestia is at https://github.com/CelestiaProject/Celestia. I lurk there, and occasionally I'll submit an issue or something. Still haven't figured out pull requests and everything...

Re: Populating WLM (and other galaxies) with REAL stars

Sorry, I've been quite busy in general and these STC files do take some time, so no, not right now. I suppose the next to do are Leo I, Leo II, and Leo A...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Sorry for the late reply. onetwothree , I tried your approach but it didn't seem to work. I've been running my Linux builds all day. They all read the files from usr/local/share/celestia. Even the version I installed with yast. I'm not sure why. Only 1 build I did long ago reads from a second folder...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

But mac runs on Darwin so its Unix based. Same behavior? Yep. You don't need this actually. Instead put you working copy somewhere, e.g. $HOME/celestia, then define environment variable CELESTIA_DATA_DIR pointing to a location defined on the previous and run Celestia. Instead of /usr/local/... it w...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

I ran into that error myself. But it always went away when I did that if 0 fix and rebuilt. Yeah, I rebuild it after doing the "if 0" fix, and it worked again, displaying the GitHub repository objects (i.e. none of my add-ons). So that's good. I still haven't found a way to edit the conte...

Great. I was fiddling around with things, and now any 1.7.0 build that I make will not work, because when I do, it says "Error reading configuration file". :fie:

Re: Planets aren't visible

Second, I am having problems with the star browser. It won't update for my current location after I open it the first time. For instance, I'm looking at Celaeno, and it tells me 14 Tau and 18 Tau are the closest stars. but when I move to, say Electra, the star browser still tells me that 14 Tau and...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between your star.dat file and the vanilla one aside from the removal of HIP 37? When i downloaded it and transferred it to my Celestia 1.7.0, it is slightly larger in data than the vanilla. I have the improvements written here under "Changes". Do y...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Aha, thanks for the tip. My Celestia 1.7.0 build now displays the objects defined in the GitHub repository, i.e. none of my add-ons. That's a step, but my edits still won't appear! Here's what I tried: 1. I renamed the stars.dat in /usr/local/share/celestia/data/ to stars-hip.dat, and then added a n...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

At this point, I'm totally confused, because my Celestia build doesn't respond to any changes I make to my default 1.6.1 installation. :fie: For example, when first loading the splash screen shows which files it's loading. The last one it's loading is called M2-9.ssc so I decided to move that file s...
