Re: Pictures from Celestia

Very nice! How did you convert it? What was the source version? I used the 2019 NASA version, but it is very hard to convert.

Re: Create an official .cmod plugin for Blender and other applications

The 3ds format is basically dead. In my opinion the obj format is useable, but we need either a direct Collada support in Celestia or a perfect obj/dae to cmod converter utility. Currently the obj->cmod conversion is not very good, the end result textures are very different from the original ones. Y...

Re: Create an official .cmod plugin for Blender and other applications

You can use MeshLab to convert to 3ds format. Obj format can be imported into cmodview, but it is not perfect:

Celestia should use the COLLADA dae format.

Re: How to make a cmod mesh from virtually any 3D model

Png and jpg textures caused constant crashes on Celestia 1.6.1, so I had to convert them into dds. The crashes disappeared. Now I mostly use 8192x8192 pixels dds tiles and it is flawless. But then again I have a PC and I use Win64 + Celestia 1.6.2 with 40GBs of add-ons.

Every video card likes DDS textures. It loads way faster.

3D models links collection

I think we should collect 3D models links relevant to Celestia. First links: https://3d-asteroids.space/ https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/resources/2377/asteroid-itokawa-3d-model/ https://www.eso.org/public/products/models3d/oumuamua/ https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/models

Re: Pictures from Celestia

It is based on a NASA map. I think they are bigger, mainly "optical" concentrations of bright stars.

Re: How to make a cmod mesh from virtually any 3D model

Method number 2: 1.) Convert the mesh into .obj format 2.) Open the .obj format with cmodview 3.) Save the opened mesh using the cmod format 4.) Open the cmod mesh with the 3ds to cmod convert and fix utility and use the "Fix" function with the "Output as Ascii" option to create ...

How to make a cmod mesh from virtually any 3D model

Steps: 1.) find the object's model and download it (if it's legally possible). It can be virtually any type of 3d mesh 2.) if Blender can import it, then import it into Blender 3.) use MeshLab to open the 3D mesh if Blender can't import it and save it as an .obj mesh 4.) import it into Blender and u...

Re: How to rotate a dsc mesh 90 degrees?

This data (Axis [-0.679381 0.221716 -0.699488] Angle 196.475) places the mesh in the target galaxy (Milky Way), but the mesh has a wrong orientation. So the end result is perpendicular to the Milky Way plane. I want to rotate the mesh 90 degrees to be on the plane of the Milky Way. This is the mesh ...

How to rotate a dsc mesh 90 degrees?

Help!

How can I rotate a dsc nebula mesh a "normal" 90 degrees?

This data -> Axis [-0.679381 0.221716 -0.699488] Angle 196.475 is perpendicular.
