Re: Celestia Origin for Linux & Mac OS X

"snap" seems to be a relatively new install format which works for most, perhaps all, linux distributions.

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

If there is no virus in your copy of the Celestia 1.7 binaries, then you should report the detection of a virus as a "false positive" to your anti-virus provider. You'll need to provide the Celestia binaries to them or point them to the downloadable files so they can verify the problem. Mo...

Re: Any end-to-end tutorial for adding a ship?

It's probably best to think of Celestia as being a 3D display program. It isn't designed to make it easy to fly spacecraft interactively, although it can be done in principle. If you want an interactive spaceflight simulator, you might consider either Orbiter (free, Windows only) or Kerbal Space Pro...

Re: Is Celestia available for IPAD pro ios 12 ?

After he stopped working on Celestia, the original author of Celestia (Chris Laurel) produced the iOS app "Cosmographia". It can be used to show objects orbiting within the Solar System, but does not support objects orbiting around other stars. It also uses a different orbit and object def...

Re: Red planet around double star - help !

As pirogronian suggested, please post your STC and SSC files. A Zip of your Zeta Reticuli folder probably would be best, including your texture files. With that information, someone might be able help improve what you're seeing.

People are working on Celestia v1.7, but it has its own problems.

Re: Red planet around double star - help !

Celestia draws planets with a red coloration if "too many" shader scripts are involved. This can happen, for example, if a planet is defined to be orbiting a multi-star system so that multiple shadows have to be drawn on the planet's surface. One workaround is to disable some of the option...

Re: Bookmarks Not Saving

You might consider re-installing Celestia into a folder that you are allowed to modify. Windows has become more and more protective about its "Program Files" directories. If you install Celestia into a folder that you own, the many protection problems go away. For example, you might create...

Re: New User Wants to Create Fictional Galaxy

@Trismegistus Did you read through the thread here on the forum about the Star Wars Galaxy Addon? It includes a little info about the Addon's development. See https://celestia.space/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16057 Inspection of the Addon's files provides a little information. In particular, see ...

Sorry, but no, they don't. That information might be available from the Simbad database at http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/ Its response usually, but not always, includes information from many different catalogs when you query it. In addition to displaying Web pages for specific objects, Simbad's ...

Re: Celestia crashes ~120 Light Years away from binary star

You need to specify what version of Celestia that you're using and what hardware you have. Bugs present in one version of Celestia might not be present in another.

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

I still see the same slowness symptoms when using Celestia_QT5130_FPS.exe For example: after letting Celestia start and take the viewpoint to the default location near the Earth, when I use the Left-Mouse-Button Drag to move the Earth back and forth, I see the Earth jump from one position to another...

Re: A Forking Commit Thread.

Here's an empty star data file. It's named stars_empty.dat. To begin with, in Celestia's data directory, you should rename your existing stars.dat to something else (perhaps stars_original.dat) and rename stars_empty.dat to be stars.dat Don't forget that all of Celestia's objects are defined with re...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Do you have actual numbers (press `)? Sorry, but I don't have that information. Unfortunately, Celestia's FPS display claims 60.0, which is obviously false. FPS evidently does not get recalculated appropriately when I continuously rotate the viewpoint around the planet using the mouse. I seem to re...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

FWIW, I used only the contents of the zip provided by Janus, with no additional catalog files. I let Celestia take the viewpoint to Earth and then rotated the viewpoint around the planet using the mouse. The QT refresh rate seemed to be 1/4 the speed of the VS version, or perhaps even slower.

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

@Janus, FWIW, your QT build runs on my ancient Dell laptop (running Win7 with current patches), but its window updates much more slowly than the non-QT version that's in the same folder. The FPS shown by the QT version seems to be lying, though. It claims ~60fps but the window obviously is updating ...

Re: The Hill's Star Map

@jujuapapa On my computer running Celestia v1.6.1, Cham's Addon shows the map as dark lines and dots against a light-colored background. (It shows most but not all of the stars of the original map.) After installing the Addon (unzip it into your extras folder) you can first use this URL to go to an ...

Re: 55 Cancri

@fyr02, The usual cause Celestia drawing a star at the wrong place on the sky is the use of the wrong RA units: using units of Hours instead of Degrees when specifying the RA. Celestia v1.6.1 STC catalogs require that STar Catalog Right Ascension values be specified in units of Degrees. This is unli...

You don't have to use photoshop. There are many free paint programs which can generate jpeg, png or dds images.

I like paint.net for Windows. Many people use gimp, which is available for Windows, MacOS and Linux.

Re: Constellations and Asterisms for other stars

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. As you've probably discovered, asterisms.dat just causes lines to be drawn in 3D between the specific stars listed in that file. The resulting constellations happen to look the way they do only because you're looking at them from our own solar system. As you've...

Re: Mars Weather Report - Is this possable?

Yes, it can be done, although writing the script doubtless would take some time. Both .CEL and .CELX scripts can be used to adjust Celestia's viewpoint, take it to specified locations and display textual information on the screen. .CEL scripts are easier to write but don't have the looping and other...
