Re: Help - CMOD seems to only use first material

Good luck!

I did a quick test after posting my response, and it didn't do what I expected. I probably made a typo of my own somewhere. *sigh*

Re: Custom star database causes Celestia to crash when certain keys are pressed

For me, Celestia v1.6.1 crashes after I select a star (left-mouse-button click on any of them) and then type "f" to follow it.

I had been wanting to then use the mouse-wheel to back off and see the overall shape of the star distribution but I can't get that far.

Re: Help - CMOD seems to only use first material

It looks to me like there's a bug in whatever program you're using to create the CMOD model. Apparently that program is not trying to use the 2nd material (material 1) at all. In a CMOD model, the first value after the word "sprites" is supposed to be the index value of the material which ...

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Thanks for letting us know that lacking the wait() caused the problem! That's a relief, since it'd be very frustrating otherwise.

Best of luck with getting your Quaternions to work as they should.

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

@SimGuy: Yup, that's the appropriate on-screen prompt. Sorry, I previously forgot to mention that you actually need two lines in order for i/o to be allowed: celestia:requestsystemaccess() wait(0) Without the wait, I doubt it'll work. I dunno if that's your problem, though. For details, see https://...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

Janus, Thanks for investigating. It certainly has me puzzled. I had a problem like this under Win7 with Celestia 1.6.1, but it went away when I upgraded to Win10 with the same graphics drivers. It might be something funky in the Windows cursor configuration, but then I'd expect it to affect 1.6.1, t...

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Sorry, at this point I don't know what might be going wrong :(

Here's a zip of a CelX Addon which does file i/o (to read .csv files) that I recently updated and have been using with no problems. I'm guessing that it'll fail for you. :(

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Unfortunately, 1.7 is still in "pre-alpha" mode and has quite a few changes and, well, bugs. I suggest it would not be appropriate to use 1.7 while trying to develop "production code" since it'd be rather difficult to separate bugs in your code from bugs or changes in Celestia. M...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

A newly observed glitch (I don't use fullscreen mode often): When running in full-screen mode at 1920x1080, my on-screen cursor is not being drawn. It appears when I move it up to the top of the screen, causing the menu bar to appear, but it goes away again as soon as I move it down so the menu bar ...

Re: Reading a file in a Lua script

Lua io. routines are working for me with both 1.6.1 and 1.7 without the presence of an explicit io.dll. I'm assuming you've included this statement in your CelX script: celestia:requestsystemaccess() I might have asked this before, but what version of Celestia are you running? 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 1.7? If ...

Re: reading my ECEF pos/vel and quaternions

Simguy, Chuft-Captain's descriptions of what I was doing is exactly right. I used that order only so I could keep their functions straight in my own mind. In some cases one or both Frames can be omitted if their default values are appropriate for the object being defined. I found it easier to write ...

Re: reading my ECEF pos/vel and quaternions

Unfortunately, I've never gotten my head around Quaternions, so I can't help directly. However, I'd tend to suspect the Orientation statement. I believe that it is used as the reference orientation for the SampledOrientation's .q file. I could be wrong, though.

Re: reading my ECEF pos/vel and quaternions

I'm assuming you're using Celestia v1.6.1 (or a close variant). My understanding is that the times used by the GUI are Gregorian, including leap seconds, etc. In contrast, the times that Celestia uses internally, including in xyzv files, are TDB. As a result, a time you specify to the GUI is unlikel...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

1. I was expecting everything necessary to be included in the .7z archive. 2. Unfortunately, the orbit gap isn't a fade. It's an abrupt turning off, which I suspect is a bug. Also, please note that the Fading Orbits option is not checked in the View Options menu as can be seen in the screenshot that...

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development Thread

It has problems on my laptop: 1. no GUI (corner) text is visible whether terse or verbose is selected. 2. There's a gap in the orbit next to the Earth. 3. Note that the OpenGL info window is improperly formatted, too. I copied all of the files from the .7z archive into (a copy of) the same directory...

One way to do it is to draw the outline of a sphere which consists only of lines instead of solid facets. The attached Hill_sphere.zip shows the Earth's Hill sphere using a plain-text ASCII CMOD mesh. You can modify its colors using your favorite text editor. Hill_sphere.zip capture_002_09032020_114...

Re: SevenSpheres is now an Admin/Mod/something

@SevenSpheres, I don't think PhpBB includes that feature. I found a rather complex PhpBB3 MOD which seems to provide that and several related anti-spam features, but modifying the copy of PhpBB running the forum might not be appropriate. See http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/PhpBB3_MOD:_phpBB_spam...

@SevenSpheres,

I believe that links in signatures were disabled as an attempt to minimize the impact of spammers. Some spammers make posts which look fine, but then update their signatures to contain advertising links. Most moderators never notice when that happens.

That certainly seems reasonable to me.

Currently that information is scattered all over the Web (some, for example, among my "resources" pages). I'm sure it'd be much more helpful if it were all in one place.

@Anthony, including those references certainly seems reasonable to me. Hopefully they'll be added to README.txt, too. Note that I'm not directly involved in Celestia's code development and don't have write access to its github repository, so I'm leaving the editing of its documentation files to thos...
