Re: how to make realistic cloud textures

To a certain extent, Photo$hop tutorials can be used in GIMP and vice-versa...it might just take a few extra minutes and steps to figure out what is what in each program.

Thanks. Doing a bump map will take your systems up a notch.

Re: Trolligi's mods

I took the liberty of putting a bump map on one of the moons. I hope you don't mind. It was done in Wilbur.

Re: Trolligi's mods

Good ideas for first add-ons! Alien worlds that look alien! Adding bump/normal maps will help improve the look, and over time, you may want to improve the overall textures. But otherwise, they don't look too bad. I like the idea of brown dwarf systems. -M- Oh, and I did have to change the folders to...

Re: Kero System

Honestly, I was getting no textures whatsoever. When I looked in the file, that was what jumped out at me. Quick fix.

Re: Kero System

Both the medres and the highres folders need to be in one folder named "textures" (no caps! Made that mistake before!) Did that and it works just fine. Nice start. I think of my first one I made and CRINGE when I do. Interesting contrast between the two giants. I find it's always a balanci...

Re: Pictures from Celestia

Celestia's temps do not account for greenhouse effect. It gives the blackbody temp, and aside from distance, the only thing that modifies temperature in Celestia is the body's albedo. In my worldbuilding notes, this world has a mass of 1.3 earths, an atmosphere that is 1.1 times that of Earth's, giv...

Re: A lonely star

All my old addons were done in Windows...every texture, .ssc and .stc. Then I switched to Linux a few years ago, and once I got the particulars figured out how to get them installed into the appropriate folder, I fired up Celestia, and VOILA!!! , I had all my add-ons back for me to enjoy! If it's ju...

Re: Pictures from Celestia

Another Earthlike I made...this one has 2 large moons. (I made them in gravity simulator. They have yet to crash or destabilize in any way.) The bluish-grey moon is Tranquility, the brown moon is Serenity. Other planets in the system include: Frontier, Toil, Guardian, Enigma, Perdition...and a coupl...

Re: Anybody besides me tired of constant captchas getting here?

DataPacRat made the suggestion I was going to,,,using Firefox's extension. I would guess that anything on Mac or Windows' "standard issue" browsers would maybe have something like that? At any rate, maybe someone who knows the most about the situation could contact Allexel directly, rather...

Re: Pictures from Celestia

Thank you, but no. The moon texture came from here: freebitmaps.blogspot.com Although, it's no longer free...I just managed to get several of them downloaded years ago. The Earthlike planet was done with GIMP, Wilbur, and a kick-butt tutorial I got on Cartographer's Guild. Additional construction of...

Re: Random gas giant

No...Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 64-bit. (Long story on the conversion to Linux, but now that I have, I wish I had started sooner with it.) Started with Peppermint, (which I still like), and since then I've tried Mint, Zorin, Bodhi and the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 16 which upgraded to v. 18.04 LTS. I tried Dee...

Re: Random gas giant

Looks simple enough, but I've hit a wall...having trouble installing cubic2erect and the panotools script. I wound up here: http://hg.code.sf.net/p/panotools/Panotools-Script , but I really, really, really do not know what I'm doing, what directory to install it in, etc. I tried following the readme...

I wouldn't say that John. Your help has proved most valuable to me.

(Now, if I could just figure out how to do a texture map in Blender...looks like a lot of fun! Hint hint.)

Probably can do it thru Cygwin...pm Selden. He probably can walk you through the process of setting it up.

Re: Creating Realistic Gas Giant Textures

It's not monstrously hard. Helps if you're a Linux user, tho. I am by no means a wizard of command-line programs, but it isn't too hard to figure out. Look it up on your favorite search engine.

Re: Custom Gas Planet Textures

Considering CGI was still at the early stages of use in '84 and the best images we had of Jupiter were from Pioneer 10 and Voyagers 1 & 2, I think they look great...including the swirling, turbulent closeups of Jupiter in 2010 . We didn't have Juno, we didn't have Galileo, we didn't even have Hu...
